Fashola flag off Black Heritage festival

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola
has appealed to Nigerians to support the
state government in its effort towards
projecting its rich cultural heritage and that
of the country to the rest of the world.
Fashola made the appeal yesterday while
flagging off Lagos Black Heritage Festival
and Lagos Carnival at a colourful event
replete with beautiful cultural performances
from troupes across the country.
The event held at the Lagoon Restaurant,
Lagos was attended by Nobel laureate,
Professor Wole Soyinka, traditional rulers,
and top government functionaries,
foreigners, tourists, among others.
Dance groups such as Agbon Dance from Ile
Ife,(Osun State ) Gbedu Oba, (Lagos), Obitun
Dance, (Ondo), among others, staged
performances in front of the venue before
the arrival of the governor to the
admiration of the audience, while the icing
on the cake came with the performance by
the Lagos State Arts and Culture troupe
which signalled the commencement of the
programme.
Fashola, in his opening remark, added a
fourth dimension to the theme of the
festival which he tagged ‘‘Eko the city of a
thousand masks,’’ stressing that the week-
long event, holding in selected venues in
Lagos, with Badagry as home of the festival,
promises to be exciting like the just
concluded MNET Face of Africa and Festival
of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) staged in 1977
in the state.
Explaining that it will also signal to the rest
of the world that the state is a home of
diverse opportunities, the governor pointed
out that Badagry identified few centuries
ago as a Port of No Return, would now
become a point of triumphant return as the
festival would harp on the achievements of
black people.
