Hollywood goes to Niger Delta

The Del-York international
powered training programme
for 400 aspiring filmmakers
drawn from the Niger-Delta
region kicked off on a big note
recently with the arrival of 36
Americans from the world
famous New York Film Academy
(NYFA), to Abuja, for the first leg
of the laudable initiative.
Amazingly, one of the film
lecturers is a Nigerian, who had
not been in the country, in the
last 19 years.
According to Mr. Linus Idahosa,
the boss of Del-York, the
trainees, among them a
physically challenged youth, are
currently lodged at a posh
housing facility in the heart of
Abuja. The heavily fortified
facility, which is made up of
three blocks of several flats, is
fully air-conditioned and also
boasts of an Olympic-sized
swimming pool for the trainees’
relaxation.
The one month programme,
which is proudly being
supported and sponsored by the
Rivers State government, the
Niger Delta Development
Commission and the Federal
Capital Territory, Abuja, is aimed
at empowering youths from the
constantly troubled Niger Delta
region. A total of three luxurious
buses was chartered to
transport the trainees from
Niger Delta, to Abuja, and it
would also take them back
immediately after the historic
programme ends.
Also, partnering the initiative,
which is currently serenading
Abuja and its environs, is the
management of Sheraton Hotel.
They are doing this by hosting
the American lecturers at a very
friendly cost, based on their
conviction that the initiative
should be supported wholly by
corporate Nigeria.
The programme, which ends in
the second week of April, 2010,
holds daily within the secured
premises of the Federal Civil
Service Institute. A total of 12
classroom blocks alongside the
main auditorium are being used
for the programme.
Some of the excited trainees
that spoke with us hailed Del-
York for coming up with the
youth-friendly initiative and
also commended the sponsors
for accepting to power it
wholly.
Idahosa and his team are also
grateful to the Nigerian Police
Force, for providing hitch-free
security as well as helping to
maintain law and order at the
on-going event, adding that
they would soon be storming
Lagos, for a similar exercise.
Speaking on why they are
serious about helping to develop
human capital through film
trainings and exposures,
Idahosa posited that the most
important and most precious
resource for industrial and
economic growth is man, hence
the need to adequately
empower him. “The whole idea
of developing a vibrant film
industry in Nigeria points
primarily to the indispensable
question of human capital…
Nigeria’s fledging film industry
has for a very long time been in
need of policies and institutions
that are capable of supporting it
to grow into what the world
knows as super powers…
Set within the context of
national films, Nigeria’s answer
to the fundamental question of
human capital lies in its infant
movie sector… We decided to
partner with NYFA, because it’s
the best hands-on film training
school in the world… And at Del-
York, we cannot isolate
ourselves from countries that
run world renowned movie
industries and expect to
generate as much as our
potentials entitles us… We also
expect government to take
advantage of the training
project to launch a
comprehensive study into the
human capital situation and
needs of the Nigerian movie
sector, as part of the immediate
efforts to reform and reposition
it for a better future
performance,” elated Idahosa
maintained.
