A mild drama ensued on Thursday morning, when bodyguards to
29-year-old Nigerian soul singer, Bukola Elemide a.k.a. Asa, harassed
journalists who were at the Lagos State High Court sitting in TBS, for
taking photographs of the singer whose N700 million suit against
Dockland Communications Services resumed hearing on that fateful day.
The case was however adjourned till May 3. Asa’s publicist, Adebola Williams who accompanied her alongside fierce-looking bodyguards to the court, upon noticing that the paparazzi were taking shots at random as the singer was about entering the courtroom drew the attention of Asa’s bouncers, as they immediately went into action, causing a mild drama outside the court. The bouncers insisted that the pictures should be deleted.
When the case came up before Justice A.J Coker, the defendant’s counsel was not in court for the cross examination. Asa was dressed in pink gown while her manager, Janet Nwose sat beside her in court.
Her lawyer expressed worry concerning the absence of the defendant’s counsel despite knowing that the claimants do not reside in the country. “The matter is on fast track and the claimants do not reside in Nigeria,” he complained.
Asa was in court over a story published by News of the People on December 14-22, 2009 edition of the magazine with the caption “Lesbianism trails Asa and Manager” which alleged that the two ladies were involved in a lesbian relationship.
The soul singer and her manager, in the suit, want the court to declare that the allegation of lesbianism against them was false, illegal and a violation of their rights. They also want the defendant restrained from further publication of malicious statements against them.
