Nigeria Hit 50 raises Stake

As part of activities marking Nigeria’s jubilee celebration, the 50 greatest Nigerian songs of all times will be celebrated on Tv and radio countdown shows across the country.
The songs, to be decided via voting throughout the month of September, will culminate into concerts to hold in three of Nigeria’s prominent cities- Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt and the United Kingdom.
These are part of activities to herald the musical quest tagged Naija hits 50 being put together by Six-Five broadcast limited, Chocolate City entertainment company and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

“Naija Hits 50 is a musical journey that seeks to identify the greatest Nigerian song since independence”, organisers said at a press brief in Lagos. “We have cultivated different genres of music such as Hip Hop, Reggae, DanceHall and Rap, therefore it won’t be out of place for us to celebrate songs that have been favourites among Nigerians since independence”, they explained.
The project is currently in its first stage which will run till the end of this month. Nominations from Nigerians in diaspora are ongoing on www.naijahits50.com while residents are implored to nominate songs via text messages. Once nomination closes, the second phase consisting radio and TV live countdown will follow.
Here, the top 50 nominated songs will be performed before live audiences by the original singers or select contemporary artistes in a talk show to be hosted by Michelle Dede. Audience votes will determine which song is the greatest Nigerian song ever.
Winner of the number one song gets a 2010 Toyota Camry with full options while remaining 49 songs will attract a platinum plaque each. The radio countdown show will be hosted by Frankie Ogar.
