PMAN: Election palaver persists

PMAN: Election palaver persists
Despite efforts of the Performing Musician Association of Nigeria (PMAN) peace committee to find a lasting solution to the eight-year crisis in the body, another development emerged during the week. Allegedly convened by Murphy Van Anthony, some musicians travelled to Port Harcourt for another round of PMAN election.
However, the election slated for last Wednesday did not hold as a signal by the police was sent to stop it. Reason being that the AIG had earlier held a meeting with various factions of the body to which they all agreed that an interim caretaker committee be formed as demanded by musicians. It was learnt that Murphy who was absent at the meeting promised to abide by whatever decision taken. Present at the AIG meeting were Dele Abiodun, Preddy Wise, Tmac Itseli and Dr. Zmacoy.
It was learnt that one of the aspirant parted with N1.5m to a former PMAN heavyweight to help garner support. The major aspirants gunning for the presidency were Hajia Oluremi Aminat Dangaji, Murphy Van Anthony and an unidentified person as at press time. But in a swift reaction, spokesman of the peace committee, Oritz Wiliki said that the election is not only illegal but null and void.
His reasons: “The government of Murphy Van Anthony is illegal. Recently, the AIG summoned them concerning the decision and petition before him and they all agreed. Now some of them are doing otherwise. That is why the peace committee decided to form an interim government which Murphy himself endorsed. Murphy is continuing in his old ways. You can never know people’s mind.
The election will not be recognised. We will make sure it doesn’t work.” Off the Stage learnt that questionnaires were distributed among musicians and stakeholders on what they would want the peace committee to do to bring lasting peace to the association. Over 50 percent agreed for an interim caretaker committee to be formed. We are keeping close watch as things unfold.
