Murder Of Ibrahim Momodu: IGP Promises ‘No Cover-Up’

Following the alleged murder of Ibrahim Momodu on May 27 in Benin City, the Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, has directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police “to take urgent and appropriate steps to unravel the real circumstances that led to the death,” police spokesman Frank E. Mba said in a statement today.
It would be recalled that yesterday, the police announced the redployment of the Divisional Police Officer of Ogida Police Station, Carol Afegbai, who was alleged to have personally shot Momodu, saying the move was to allow “a thorough investigation” of the incident.
“While restating his Administration’s zero tolerance for any act that impinges on the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the rights to life, IGP affirms that no stone will be left unturned in the quest for the truth, stressing that the Force will not condone any act of cover-up in the case,” Mba added.
Analysts fault a situation where the police probe the police using police means, saying that the approach has never yielded justice and the apparatus of the police is in the end used to protect senior officers who violate the law.
“In the current situation, the public is being asked to believe that the Police Commissioner will dispassionately use the same officers who are friends and colleagues of Afegbai to investigate her,” an observer said.  “That is most unlikely to happen, and in a few months nothing will be heard about this matter and Afegbai will be free to use the same police personnel to go after her accusers and critics.”

Former Governor Sylva Breaches Protocol To Shake Hands With President Goodluck Jonathan

Former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, today breached President Goodluck Jonathan’s security, walking up to the Nigeria leader at the high table of a wedding party and shaking hands with him.
The occasion was the public wedding reception of a daughter of another former governor, Peter Odili. A security source told Sahara Reporters both the security and protocol of the President were taken aback by Mr. Sylva’s action, as he approached the high table while the president was already seated with other guests, however, they claimed they knew the president was not in any danger.
A source close to Mr. Sylva said he only went to greet his next-door neighbor   and celebrant, Mr. Odili and that he (Sylva) used that opportunity to say " hello " to the President as a form of courtesy. " It was a chance meeting between the two, there is no reason to impute any motive, when Mr. President asked Sylva how he was doing he said he was still alive and left to his seat afterwards, " said the source that witnessed the incident.
 Sylva, the former governor of Bayelsa State, is facing corruption charges initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
 Mr. Sylva has repeatedly stated that his trial was motivated by his political disagreements with Mr. Jonathan. He was prevented from running for a second term in office by Mr. Jonathan, who then imposed upon the state as governor, his protege, Seriake Dickson.
 Political observers say that today’s event also reflects the intricate connections between power and corruption in Nigeria. Odili is widely-known to have looted the resources of Rivers State during his tenure as governor, but has never been prosecuted because of a perpetual injunction he obtained for self-protection.

Nelson Mandela in a ‘Serious’health Condition With Lung Infection

Former South African president Nelson Mandela was rushed to hospital in a ‘serious’ condition today following a recurrence of the lung infection that has plagued him in recent months.
The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader, whose health has been failing in recent years, has been hospitalised three times since December.
Mandela was said to be in ‘good spirits’ but the situation was ‘serious this time’, a government spokesman told a South African news channel today.

Armed Bandits Put Kaduna Villages Under Siege, Looting And Killing

Attacks on banks in Birnin Gwari four months ago

Barely four months after armed bandits inflicted a massive attack on banks, police stations and settlements in Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, the area has come under a similar attack, with several villagers reported to have been killed.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters armed men surrounded Goro-Dutshe district, Gwaska and several adjoining villages. Goron-Dutshe is a border town between Kaduna and Zamfara, and our source described it as located about 30 kilometers from Dansadau.
In Goron-Dutshe, the gunmen reportedly went on a looting and raping spree, maiming hunters and vigilantes that resisted the siege. They also burnt down several houses in the area before moving to Gwaska village, where they inflicted further injuries on more villagers.
A security source told us that efforts to reach the villages have been complicated by logistic problems.  He disclosed that it will take some three hours from Birnin Gwari to reach the besieged villages, which are surrounded by thick forests and linked by poor road networks.
It is unclear if the helicopters recently launched by the Nigeria police for fighting crime are being deployed to such areas.
