Globacom dumps Daddy Showkey,Ego?

There were strong indications that foremost indigenous
Telecommunication company GLO may have dispensed with the
services of Ghetto soldier, Daddy Showkey and Ego as the
company ’s Ambassadors.
Sources said Ego who was signed on at the peak of her career as
Lagbaja ’s lead vocalist, especially when she won her way into the
hearts of many through the song, Never Far Away.was dropped
because after she left Lagbaja to go solo, Glo expected her to
come out with her own hit album.
Unfortunately she failed to achieve this up till dates.
Daddy Showkey’s ‘offence’ we gathered was that he requested for
an increase in payment, a move which didn’t go down well with
the management. To sum up the story, the duo was let off the
hooks because, they were no longer in touch with Glo ’s
customers through their career and therefore dumped.

Sorrows,Tears @ DaGrin's Interment

Strings of impromptu activities have pervaded this outgoing
week, all organised to celebrate the brief but impacting life of late
26 year old rapper Olaonipekun Olaitan a.k.a Dagrin, who passed
on 6pm, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH),
penultimate Thursday after surviving a horrendous car crash.
The events held both at home and abroad were organised by
different stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment industry and
many of Dagrin ’s ex-colleagues, fans and industry patrons took
time to attend these functions in memory of the dead.
After the press and fans besieged LUTH on Friday
(23rd April), hoping to see his body moved out of
the morgue, Dagrin ’s family and friends released
official burial plans for the late CEO. His father,
Comrade Olaniyi Olaonipekun appealed to
aggrieved fans- many who insisted on seeing the
deceased ’s body before leaving the hospital
premise, promising that he would not be buried
in secret.
He was quoted as saying, “I am not mourning
please. I want everybody to know that Da Grin is
a national loss. So it ’s Nigeria that is mourning”.
Organised activities in Dagrin’s honour began on Sunday with a
candle-light procession to his parents house in Meiran, Lagos from
the late rapper ’s last residence in Sunshine Estate, Agege.
Apart from friends’ changing their profile pictures to those of Da
Grin’s, many statuses have been dedicated to saying something
directly or indirectly, on Facebook and Twitter, all about the life
and time of the rapper and his untimely and painful demise.
Pre-burial activities began on Wednesday with ‘Industry Nite in
memory of Da Grin’ at popular Lagos club, Tribecca. It had in
attendance a couple of the CEO’s contemporaries like General
Pype, Sasha, Kaha and even seniors like Sound sultan, Baba Dee
and Ras Kimono, even though the popular A-listers, like D ’banj
and Darey were absent.
Donations were collected for the family of the dead. The Place,
another celebrity hang out spot in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, held a tribute
party at 7pm, same day in the late rapper ’s memory. Thursday
was candle light procession from akogun’s one-time residence in
Surulere to popular hang out spot, Ojez at 6pm while his body
was laid to rest on Friday at the Ebony Private Vault in Atan
cemetery, Yaba, Lagos.
And today, at the Swe Bar & Lounge, Onikan, Lagos- a place Da
Grin frequented in his days as an artiste, an event tagged “Da Grin,
The Man & His Music” will begin by 6pm till dawn. The event
packaged by the management of the lounge in conjunction with
ACE magazine will feature special Karaoke editions of Da Grin ’s
songs.
“It’s a tribute to a man who was not only a friend of the house but
an extremely gifted artiste. We want to celebrate his
achievements, his life and all that he stood for ”, the statement by
organisers read in part.
Sunday has been set aside as the official visiting day at Mr and Mrs
Olaniyi Olanipekun ’s residence in Meiran, Lagos.
*Da grin’s official tribute song
To properly immortalize the Chief Executive Omo-ita (CEO),
barrack O ’Da Grin, colleagues have put together a two part song
as an all stars’ tribute to Da Grin. The song is titled ‘My Pain’ and
features Sheyman, Reminise, Durella, El Dee, Omawunmi,
Jahbless, Ajasa, Ruggedman, Banky W and T-Code in the first part
and in this order. The other part parades Dude Tetsola, Waje,
Bigiano, Kel, AY.Com and Jaywon all pouring out their hearts in
memory of the late rapper. The song is produced by Sheyman.
*His death and the HHWA
Even though living is better than dying, like Michael Jackson, like
Elvis Presley, Da Grin ’s death is whipping up massive sentiments
which just might help him wins his three nominations at this
year ’s Hip Hop World Awards; even if post-humus.
The late rapper is nominated in the Album of the Year, Artiste of
the Year and Best Rap Album categories. Intensive vote campaign
is on-going by fans on Facebook asking all to win the first award
(s) for the rapper ’s in memory of his impact on the Nigerian music
scene.
*Did he live expecting death?
Da grin worked tirelessly like he knew he had a short time to live.
In the few months of fame that music brought him while he was
alive, he recorded more collaborations than any other known
artiste in Nigeria.
And he didn’t just rap on others songs’, he asserted himself with
each word winning fans all the way and making such songs
become almost compelling each time they played on radio or
were shown on Tv. His first video appearance was on YQ ’s E fi mi
le, No wonder YQ is yet to come around since Dagrin’s demise.
Pon pon pon, Kondo, Mo ti gboro and lately Ghetto Dreams are
perhaps the most popular of his songs and now slowly but
gradually, ‘If I die’ is filtering in.
The song, If I die, a new track recorded by Da Grin perhaps for his
new album, leaked on the internet few hours after he passed on,
as though pre-planned. The lyrics are as gruesome as the rapper ’s
death with chorus lines like ‘If I die, make you no cry for me. E
je’n sinmi (let me rest).
If I die They pretending like my friend. But they wanna see the
end. Ko le ye won (They can ’t understand).’‘ The song suggests
that the rapper had many haters and that he perhaps, lived
everyday expecting and unafraid of dying.

The 1st African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) holds later this
year in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital. Mrs. Peace
Anyiam_Osigwe, founder of AMAA, made this disclosure at the
recent 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in
Yenogoa.
AFRIFF is a celebration of the art of filmmaking Africa’s deep
connection with the world through films. With the theme “Africa
Unites”, the vision is to reflect a common true African identity and
to re_establish Africa as an original home to all.
Anyiam_Osigwe said, “Africa Unites” to her means ”a way of
unification with the world, a reflection of Africa’s desire to be a
respected member of the world stage.”
For her, films are the vehicle for unity. “They have the power to
connect people. These films’ stories and characters generate a
bond with their audience allowing them to relate and feel Africa,”
she said.
Film makers in Africa and the diaspora will be showcased
alongside their counterparts from all across the globe at the event.
It will also host both local and international celebrities, actors,
directors, film buyers, distributors, visual artists, film students,
amateurs, film lovers and the press.
The film festival offers a platform for recognition and interaction
between talents and film industry professionals. It will feature a
film market, labs, seminars and workshops focusing on key film
industry topics as well as new ways of harnessing resources for
the ever_growing talent and skill displayed in Africa ’s
entertainment industry.
According to AMAA boss, AFRIFF is being set up as a result of the
success of last year ’s ION International Film Festival ’09 hosted in
Port Harcourt.

TAVA raises the bar @ Nollywood

After successfully hosting the maiden edition of the awards,
organizers of the African Audio_Visual Awards (TAVA) said that
this year ’s award, which holds on the 23rd of July, 2010, is being
packaged to raise the bar in Nollywood.
Organisers made this disclosure last week during a media parley
held at O ’Jez Restaurant, Surulere, Lagos.
Initiator of the award, Mr. Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, said his
initiative is unique because while other awards celebrate actors
and actresses who are in front of the camera, TAVA gives
prominence to the people behind the pictures and sounds.
It also draws professionals in the music, film, television and
advertising industry under one platform to celebrate and honour
outstanding personalities in the presence of an ‘A List’ audience;
which includes diplomats, heads of government, actors, music
icons, television idols, social celebrities and captains of industries.
According to him, TAVA seeks to reward team work in creating
perfect pictures and perfect sounds. “We seek to create a
benchmark for professionalism towards an African audio_visual
renaissance where global pictures with universal sounds will make
Nollywood pictures enjoyed and celebrated, worldwide rather
than just being tolerated, ” he said.
Ogunjiofor, whose Living in Bondage laid the foundation for the
movie industry, Nollywood used the occasion to announce the
invitation of entries and nominations for the 2010 edition of TAVA .
Organisers began to take in entries from all over Africa on
Thursday, April 22. Receipt of applications will end on June 30.
“We have expanded the award categories due to the need to
accommodate more entries as we all know that the African
entertainment industry is expanding on a daily basis, ” he
informed.
Entries should be works done from June 2009 to June 2010.
Ogunjiofor also disclosed that July 1 through July 17 is for jury
nominations, while a shortlist of finalists will be made public seven
days to the event scheduled for MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos on
July 23.
The film maker added that what makes TAVA different from other
awards held in the country is because “it is a platform created to
harmonise all aspects of story_telling that employ pictures and
sounds, music videos, film, television and advertising
commercials. While other awards talk mainly of people in front of
the camera. ”
He noted that many things happen behind the scene in such
creative endeavours as film making, music, advertising and
television production. According to him, a successful art project in
any of these genres is a product of harmonious team work.
“If the work of a DOP (director of pictures) is not optimal, the
work of a director who is controlling the picture will not be good,
and if the producer did not hire the right director, the right lighting
person and others, the work that they seek to do will not be
optimal. We have never celebrated these people in Nigeria and
Africa and TAVA seeks to reward such people, ” he said.

I'm on my way stardom, says Vicky Njoku

One is bound to mistake her for one of the screen goddesses.
Endowed with good shapes and curves, Vicky Njoku (what a
coincidence),is on course to redefine her destiny. She ’s drifting
away from what she knows how to do best -modelling into
acting to make her mark.
Vicky confirmed to HVP recently that she’s currently on location
working with one of Nollywood top directors.
Though she refused to disclose the name of the director, the 23
year-old Delta State born model believes that her delving into the
world of make-believe will go a long way to strengthen her
modelling career, as well as give her the edge to reposition for a
greater challenge.
“I’m currently working with one of the
biggest directors in Nollywood. I hope
to make my first hit soon. It ’s a gradual
thing.” she echoed.
The young model said, she started her
modelling career way back in her
secondary school days, at the age of
16 years. Even though, she is delving
into acting, young Vicky allayed the
fear that she would soon quit
modelling. “ I’m not living modelling
for acting. I’m still gonna be modelling
because that’s where my passion lies.
I have strong passion for modelling.
But I also have flair for acting. ”
Asked to give a brief insight into the movie that will launch her to
limelight, Vicky only muted, “it’s a movie to watch and we are
keeping it under warp.”
According to her, while she ventured into modelling, she has
nobody to call her mentor. “Nobody really mentored me, because
of the passion I have for modelling, I decided to go into it on my
own. ”she said, adding that “ while I was growing up, I used to
stand before the mirror to admire myself as a model.
Today, it is a dream come through for me. Though, modelling
has got its good and bad aspects. But all the same, I ’m enjoying
what I’m doing today.”
