 James Iroha (aka  Giringory Akabuogu)

By Nseobong Okon-Ekong and Chinyere Okoye
Two months ago, veteran actor, James Iroha, better known as Giringory Akabuogu was a happy participant in a landmark cultural fiesta: Igbotomma; that celebrates the passage of time in Item, Bende division of Abia State. As he joined his contemporaries to mark the attainment of the 70 years age grade, little did he know it would be their last happy event together. He died Tuesday at age 70.
A post on his Facebook page last December had issued an open invitation to all and sundry thus, “If you happen to be anywhere near Amokwe Item on the 27th of December, I would seriously like to have you come to mine for a very unserious event. I am being forcefully retired from traditional activities and apparently it will have to be celebrated, as in loads of wack, drinks and laughs. Come with your autograph books as some of my professional colleagues will be present, don't forget to update your insurance policies as there may be risks of cracking your ribs whilst laughing, (don't say I didn't warn you). Seriously guys, it will be a privilege to have you around for my ‘Igboto nma’.”
A leading member of the cast of one of the longest running comedy on Nigerian television -Masquerade (which later transformed to the New Masquerade) - Iroha was the creative powerhouse of the serial and it was a positive commentary on his humility that  he wrote and directed most of the stories but assigned the role of a houseboy to himself.
So for the duration of the Masquerade soap which held television viewers in Nigeria spellbound for close to two decades, Giringory and Clarus Mbojikwe (David Ofor) were faithful sidekicks (as houseboys) to Chief Zebrudaya Okorigwe Nwogbo alias 4:30 (Chika Okpala).
He was determined to offer a comic relief to his Igbo folks men and women who were still hurting from the pangs of the Nigerian civil war.
Giringory was one of the pioneer students of the Theatre Arts Department, University of Ibadan. Though a sound university graduate, he spoke the dialectal Pidgin English with impeccable speed and mastery, all embroidered with a tapestry of mischief in his character portrait.
In one of his interviews, he said: “I joined Theatre Arts in 1966 to make sure that people got entertained with what my mother was doing unknowingly. The passion to act was there, so I could not imagine myself doing something else. Even when I was doing a big administrative job in an office.”
Recounting how it all began, Iroha’s narrative had it that, “the original idea started as a radio programme, which actually started just after the war ended, all in a bid to cushion the pain and hurt that people felt. I sincerely hope it worked. Well the show got so popular that the idea of taking it to television became real, it was then that the name changed to Masquerade.”
According to one of his sons, Uche James Iroha, who confirmed the death, it came as a shock to them though he had been ill for a while.
A message posted on Facebook supposedly by one of his sons, Akwari, gave the period of his life as being between September 1942 to February 2012. He posted a moving epitaph thus: ”Not long ago a man we have all come to love, a man that has made us laugh, a friend to all but will always be Dad to my little sister Ugonma, my brothers Chiemela, Uche, Kelechi and me passed on.Chief James Udensi Akwari Iroha, OON, has passed on today. May his cheerful soul rest in the Lord.”
He also noted that as a child, his father always shared his fond memories about The New Masquerade. Quoting his father, he said: “I would not forget the fact that the programme itself was a kind of tonic for people's souls. It offered them a kind of break in their tension - charged atmosphere. People identified themselves with the programme because it was for the people and humanity.”
He said he appreciated what he was doing, not for money, not for wealth, but anywhere he went at that time, “people kept calling me Giringori! Giringori!! It made me feel fulfilled”.
Though it is sad that as a professional actor, the government did nothing before his death but some of his professional colleagues like Chief Zebrudaya and Ovularia came when Giringory’s wife died. “That was very encouraging,” James said.
But the man himself bore no grudge against government on his seeming neglect. Even as his later years were filled with tales of misery, poverty and ill-health, Giringory never lost his sense of humour. While hoping in the face of subjugating despair, he expected the best and would not blame the government for not paying his pension on time, reasoning that in the face of dwindling resources, government was likely to attend to the needs of its serving personnel before considering the plight of pensioners like himself.
Speaking to the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) President, Mr. Segun Arinze, he said: “We at the AGN commiserate with his family.
“The Giringory Akabuogu I know in those days has made his mark in acting and he was one of the people that displayed passion in acting. After the civil war The New Masquerade helped to brighten the faces of the Easterners because they lost their loved ones, property and homes.”
His death yesterday brings to an end a period of personal suffering and ill health culminating in loss of sight. Incidentally, Clarus his co-traveller on the New Masquerade train is also reported to be blind.

Giringory’s death also comes on the heel of the death of Apena (Chief Christy Essien-Igbokwe), another prominent member of the New Masquerade cast who died last year.
His death has also put paid to a book project on the story of his life that he was working on.

Snooki Lied, She's Three Months Pregnant

Snooki lied to all of us, and I, for one, am disappointed. If you'll remember, earlier in the month, reports surfaced that Snooki was with child, but she denied the story completely, saying that it was mean for the media to call her fat.

Turns out that she's three months pregnant, with a fetus that is undoubtedly floating in a cocktail of: 2 parts embryonic fluid, 1 part tequila, with a splash of pickle juice.

Sources tell Page Six: “MTV went into crisis mode after they found out. They’re trying to hide it because it would greatly affect the creative direction of the show. ”

The show they're referring to is a 'Jersey Shore' spinoff starring Snooki and JWoww. It doesn't yet have a title. But it's fairly obvious that it'll be 'Jersey Shore' meets 'Teen Mom 2'

Page Six says Snooki "lied" and "has already brokered a deal" to announce the news on the cover of a celebrity mag.

The father is reportedly Jionni LaValle, Snooki's longtime boyfriend whom she cheated on with 'Jersey Shore' costar Vinny Guadagnino. Mike 'The Situation' also claims he received fallacio from Snooki, but she denies that. So yeah, it happened.

“I definitely do want kids, but I’m not pregnant… Being pregnant should be a real thing and a happy thing, and I’m not," Snooki said on 'Good Morning America' earlier this month.

Site Gossip Cop seems to think the report is accurate and adds that when they reached out to a rep for Snooki, they were told "no comment."

Do you think Eddie Murphy will be on “Braxton Family Values” now? Singer Toni Braxton and actor Eddie Murphy have apparently been dating secretly for the past four months!

A source tells US Weekly, “[they] are seeing each other and very into it.”

Now Toni, would you say that Eddie Murphy has successfully unbroken your heart? Or is this just another sad love song? Did you see what I did there…with the song titles?

Anyways, Toni has been separated from ex-husband Keri Lewis since 2009. Eddie was first married to Nicole Mitchell, he’s spice girl Melanie Brown’s baby daddy, he was married again to Tracey Edmonds and also rumored to have been linked to the late Whitney Houston in the late 1980s. Hey, you can’t say he’s not experienced.

Murphy was spotted backstage at Braxton’s LA concert on February 19 but her rep insists, “Toni and Eddie are just friends and have been fans of each other’s work for a long time.”

Why do reps even comment anymore? We all know that “just friends” is code for “basically married, considering adopting a dog together.”

However, the source says that “their kids have met and everything. It’s getting very serious.” Speaking of kids, Eddie’s got 8 of them.

This is great news for Braxton, whose quest for love has been the main subject of her families reality show, Braxton Family Values.

Lady Gaga's First Ever Photoshoot, Before She Was Famous

Before she was Born This Way, before she was Mother Monster, before she was Marrying The Night, Lady Gaga was just a regular 19-year-old who sat down with a friend for a “sexy” photo shoot in her parents apartment with some strategically placed silk blankets on top of a piano, and who hasn’t done that before?

While young Gaga probably thought these were the steamiest photos she’s ever taken (at the time) they are nothing more than some really good pics for an online dating profile.

The photos were taken by Gaga’s restaurant co-worker Malgorzata Saniewska in 2005 and were taken in her parents Upper East Side apartment in what we’re referring to as her “first ever” photo shoot.

In all the photos she’s wearing a white silk slip and white pointed shoes and her hair is long and dark and honestly rivals the strands of J-Woww.

In many of the photos, Gaga straddles the top of a piano making a “come hither” face, which would arguably make no man, woman, or little monster want to come anywhere.

She lays down on the piano, she sits on stop of it, she holds a silk blanket in her lap in and makes a “sexy” face. I cannot wait to hear what Lady Gaga has to tweet about this once she finds out someone leaked her old myspace photos.

These photos are almost as good as that vintage video clip of Lady Gaga getting ink from Kat Von D, and Kat is all like “Oh, you’re a singer? Good luck with that!”

Reese Witherspoon wants her children to understand what domestic violence is, so she talked to them about one of the more infamous cases in recent years: Chris Brown and Rihanna.

“We talk about domestic violence and what that means,” Witherspoon told People at the 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters in Washington, D.C.

“Although the concept is somewhat foreign to them, they're starting to understand that this happens to families in our country and all throughout the world." Witherspoon says her two kids, Ava, 12 and Deacon, 8, know about the Rihanna/Chris Brown drama.

"My daughter knows what happened. My son knows as well. We talk about what is abuse. I think it's important to talk to our daughters – and our sons – in order to educate them at an early age about what's appropriate and what is absolutely not acceptable."

Meanwhile, Reese is enjoying married life with husband Jim Toth. Next month, the two will celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

“I don't know what we're doing, but I'm very excited!" she says. "It happened so fast – it all went so quickly."

Reese might have picked a husband, but the actress says she has trouble picking her movie roles.

"I am not very decisive at all, I can’t commit to a vacation until the very last minute. ‘Should we go there? I don’t know…’ I don’t know why.”

Cate Blanchett Wants To Be A James Bond Villain

If she can play Bob Dylan, she can play anything.

Ridiculously talented actress Cate Blanchett has played everyone from a 60s male folk singer to Queen Elizabeth I. But there’s one role she’s still dying to take on: James Bond Villain.

“Oh God! Yes! I’d be there in a heartbeat,” Cate told the April issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK. “I love Lotta Lenya [Ross Klebb in 1963’s From Russia with Love]. She had a club foot and a limp. I’m not a purist in that way.”

So what’s the secret to Cate’s immense talent? The actress says she uses acting as an emotional outlet.

“When you’re a teenager, you act things out rather than experience them, so that through a relationship being cataclysmic, you reach some emotional catharsis. I have that through work now, so I don’t need to act it out in my daily life. Not that I think all work is therapy.”

But when it comes to getting behind the camera, Cate’s not as confident. The actress says:

“There is a film I’d love to direct, but I just don’t know if I’ve got the patience. In theatre, you can have an idea and get on with it. In film, you hear of people sitting on an idea for eight years, by which time the idea has changed and evolved and become something else.”

Blanchett is married to playwright Andrew Upton and says he has a habit of giving her domestic gifts.

“My husband went through a phase of giving me vacuum cleaners, sewing machines and Mixmasters. It's ironic. He is encouraging me to develop a hobby, I think. And an actress once advised me, ‘Make sure you do your own laundry - it will keep you honest.’”

And no, I don’t know if she’s starring as an alien.

Lady Gaga is known for her bizarre stunts and costumes, so it’s no surprise that she has a cameo in a movie about Secret Service agents who fight space creatures.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are reprising their alien-battling roles, and Will recently talked to Brazilian website ElCorilloRD.com about the flick.

"We have a couple of celebrity cameos, but I think I cannot reveal who they are," Smith said. He then added: “We must keep as a surprise that Lady Gaga appears.” Oh, ok. It’s a surprise, according to Will Smith’s interview with the media. So, you know, don’t tell anyone y’all.

Michael Jackson made a cameo in the last ‘MIB’ sequel. But the upcoming movie is rumored to have an even more celebrity-packed cast, which includes: Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Jemaine Clement, Bill Hader and Nicole Scherzinger. The film is set to be released in May.

Meanwhile, Gaga is set to visit Harvard University today, along with Oprah Winfrey and spiritual leader Deepak Chopra. The event is for launching the singer’s Born this Way Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to promoting gay rights and putting an end to bullying.

The nonprofit says it seeks to “foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated.”

Gaga started it amid the news of a New York teenager’s suicide last year. The teen was harassed over his sexual orientation, and Gaga wrote on her Twitter that “bullying must become illegal.”
